Laura's Knee Injury Story

June 16, 2007, we brought home Koda, Sheryl's little stallion to breed to Apache. Ricky didn't like him right off the bat, thought he'd get used to it. I finally caught up to a friend to come see little Keebler, she hadn't been to my house before. As I was talking about Ricky (whom was talking to the stallion on the other side of the fence) explaining about his injury, I simply touched his leg from the side of him and he kicked straight sideways and got me in the knee. I looked down and saw my knee was pretty messed up, so had J.C. call 911 for me. Meanwhile waiting for the ambulance to come, I had to make other phone calls to get Melinda to feed (hadn't gotten that far) and Pat and Danny to come over for support. Shon was out fishing and didn't have his phone.

I knew my knee was a mess, but we didn't know to what extent yet. I knew my kneecap was on the outside of my knee, instead of the top where it should have been. They just put a pillow around it and wrapped it up, and off to Arlington we go. Once there, they X-ray and see the knee joint is off about 2 cm, so they decide since there is a major artery in the back of the knee, they send me to Harborview. What a time that was. First off when I get there, they put my kneecap back in order, with no pain meds. OUCH. It was over quick though, and felt a little better right after. Spent Saturday night, Sunday, and Monday till midnight in the ER overflow area. What a zoo. Midnight they finally moved me to a room, early tuesday a doctor came in and said I destroyed all the ligaments in my knee and needed several surgeries. They first said they would send me to the UW, then said they'd do it there at Harborview. Later they came back and said they scheduled it at the UW and were sending me home in the meantime.

Progress.....

June 29, 2007. Went in to the UW hospital for my surgery, they had to reconstruct 3 of the 4 ligaments in my knee, and re-attach the meniscus. Went home the next afternoon. Pain has been pretty minimal, it only hurt when I had to get up for awhile, felt like the weight of the brace was pulling on the incisions. That went away in just a couple of days though.

July 6th. Went back to the UW for my follow up appointment. Not doing any PT yet, just keeping the knee straight. They were going to have me in the CPM machine right after surgery, but because of the extent of it they decided not to. So after this appointment I started that, increasing it one degree at a time.

July 11th. Went for my first Physical Therapy appointment here in Arlington. They are very nice people, this is the same office Shon and Pat (his mom) have both been to before after their surgeries. I now have my homework exercises to do and go back Mon and Wed next week.
