This is my prize boy, given to me by Pat and Danny Mann when he was just a weanling. This is the first one I've had from such a young age! He's full of himself to say the least, and smart as they come. Already almost 15 hands tall at only 1 1/2 years old. He'll be 2 in March 05. I hope to find the time to start saddling him in the round pen this winter, and have his ground work ready for me to have the first ride spring of 2005. I don't want to rush him, even though he's so big, he's still very young mentally. I want to make sure he's ready for the work to come! This past 9 months with him has been a learning experience, both with handling and because of a nasty leg injury that led me to a decision of whether to put him down or not. Obviously I chose not to and give it a shot at healing his injury. Story is he was running the fence line with my neighbor's horses, kicked out and caught his back leg over the barbed wire. Sparing the gross details, he severed the tendons that run down the front of the back leg, and there's a groove in the bone where the wire started to saw into it. He was fortunate in that the injury did not get into the hock joint, so he should have a life with no ill effects from this. The vet said he might have trouble placing his foot, as the tendons that severed were the ones to pull the hoof back up to take the next step down on it. He's never shown any sign of having trouble with that leg at all. I had to put him in a stall at Pat and Danny's house for 3 months to let it heal. I was over every night to do bandage changes, hosing the wound in the wash rack and re-bandaging it. The quick healing process amazed the vet, he didn't think it would come out nearly as good as it did. Now there's just a bit of a scar where the hair hasn't grown back. He plays like mad out in his field, running, jumping, sliding to stops in front of the gate and taking off again the other direction. He's quick and strong!! I am thinking of taking him in the direction of Reining, he's got the athleticism and the ambition for it I think. He just loves to go!
